The Lifespan of Veneers: What Should You Expect?

Hiding smile imperfections, like cracks, chips, stains, gaps, and misshapen teeth, can be achieved with dental veneers. Customized based on a patient’s preferred tooth size, shape, and color, they offer a balanced and long-lasting cosmetic solution. However, while veneers offer many benefits, one might ask how long these restorations can be expected to last.

What Kind of Veneers Are Available?

Not all cosmetic dentists provide the same veneers. While most opt for porcelain, others may also offer composite veneers. What is the difference?

Composite Veneers

These restorations are made from resin and are often more affordable than the alternative – porcelain. Any chips or cracks that may occur can be easily repaired, with minimal enamel removal, so the patient can keep more of their natural teeth.

Some of the drawbacks of composite veneers include a lifespan of 4-8 years and greater fragility than porcelain veneers, which means they may develop stains more easily. Also, depending on the skillset of the dentist and lab technician, resin veneers may appear bulky.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are known for their durability, lifelike appearance, and stain resistance. As long as an individual takes care of their new teeth, they can expect their veneers to last anywhere from 10-15 years; however, some cases have lasted longer.

Potential setbacks with porcelain veneers include a costlier investment and the need to replace them rather than repair any damage that may occur.

What Kind of Maintenance Should Be Considered to Extend Their Lifespan?

Taking care of veneers requires the patient to commit to a good oral hygiene routine that includes brushing twice daily, flossing at least once daily, and rinsing as instructed. Regular checkups and cleanings are also encouraged to allow a cosmetic dentist to assess the condition of the veneers and the underlying natural teeth.

No matter which kind of veneers a person chooses – composite or porcelain – the responsibility to protect their new teeth remains the same. A mouthguard and avoiding stain-causing foods can increase the lifespan of these restorations.

Why Do Veneers Need To Be Replaced?

Since veneers are viewed as a semi-permanent cosmetic solution, they are not designed to last forever. Instead, they require replacement over time, often as a result of:

  • Gum recession – This causes the veneer to become visible, as it no longer sits against the gumline.
  • Daily wear and tear – Over time, biting, speaking, and chewing can lead to normal wear that requires replacement.
  • A change in a person’s bite – If teeth become decayed, or an individual’s bite changes because of loose or damaged teeth, veneers will need to be replaced.

Veneers are still a worthy investment. Not only will patients enjoy a more confident smile, but they’ll also appreciate the positive impact these restorations have on their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
